Why WhatsApp Web isn't working or won't sync

Updated in 2026 ยท 4 min read

If WhatsApp Web is stuck loading, isn't showing your chats, or isn't syncing new messages, it's usually not a serious problem. Go through these steps in order: most of the time the fix is in the first two.

In this article:

  1. Check your phone's internet connection
  2. Link again by scanning the QR code
  3. Update your computer's browser
  4. Check your phone's date and time
  5. Close old sessions from your phone
  6. Clear your browser's cache or cookies

1. Check your phone's internet connection

Nowadays WhatsApp Web can work independently for a while thanks to multi-device, but if your phone has been without an internet connection (neither wifi nor mobile data) for a long time, sync problems can appear. Check that your phone has a stable connection before moving on to the next steps.

2. Link again by scanning the QR code

If the session has gotten stuck, the fastest fix is usually to link the device again. On your phone, go to Settings โ†’ Linked devices โ†’ Link a device, and scan the QR code shown on your computer screen.

Quick tip: if the QR code won't scan, move your phone closer to or further from the screen and make sure the camera has good lighting.

WhatsApp Web needs a relatively recent browser version to work properly. Check for pending updates in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and restart the browser after installing them.

4. Check your phone's date and time

If your phone's date or time is set incorrectly, the secure verification of the session between the phone and the browser can fail. Turn on "Automatic date and time" in your phone's system settings.

5. Close old sessions from your phone

Having many devices linked at once can cause sync failures. Go to Settings โ†’ Linked devices on your phone and review the list: log out of any devices you no longer recognize or use.

6. Clear your browser's cache or cookies

Sometimes the problem lies in the browser's own saved data for the web.whatsapp.com page. Go into your browser settings, find the privacy or site data section, and clear the cache and cookies just for that site. Then reload web.whatsapp.com and link again if it asks you to.

โœ” If WhatsApp Web still won't sync after trying these steps, try another browser or another computer to rule out the problem being on your end.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to keep my phone connected to the internet while using WhatsApp Web?

With the current multi-device feature, WhatsApp Web can keep working for a while even if your phone loses connection, although for the initial pairing and to avoid sync issues it's recommended that your phone has a connection.

Can I use WhatsApp Web without keeping my phone nearby at all times?

Yes, thanks to multi-device mode, although it's still your phone number on your phone that controls the account, so if you log out or unlink the device from your phone, WhatsApp Web will stop working.

How many devices can I link to my WhatsApp at once?

WhatsApp allows you to link up to four additional devices (computers, tablets) besides your main phone, all managed from Settings โ†’ Linked devices.
