Why WhatsApp won't download photos and how to fix it

Updated in 2026 ยท 4-minute read

If you open a photo in WhatsApp and it stays loading forever, or the download arrow doesn't even appear, it's almost always one of these seven reasons. Go through them in order: the problem is usually solved by the first or second one.

In this article:

  1. Check your internet connection
  2. Check your storage space
  3. Your phone's date and time are out of sync
  4. Clear WhatsApp's cache
  5. Update the app
  6. Check storage permissions
  7. When to reinstall WhatsApp

1. Check your internet connection

This is the most common cause. If you have poor signal or slow wifi, the photo stays stuck "downloading" indefinitely. Try turning airplane mode on and off for three seconds, or switch from wifi to mobile data (or vice versa) to see if the download starts.

2. Check your storage space

If your phone is nearly full, WhatsApp can't save the file even if it downloads it. Go to Phone Settings โ†’ Storage and check how much free space you have left. If you have less than 500 MB free, free up space before continuing.

Quick tip: inside WhatsApp, go to Settings โ†’ Storage and data โ†’ Manage storage to see and delete large files you no longer need.

3. Your phone's date and time are out of sync

If your phone's date or time is set incorrectly, WhatsApp may fail to verify the secure connection with the server and block downloads. Turn on "Set automatically" for date and time in your system settings.

4. Clear WhatsApp's cache

Over time, temporary files build up and can block new downloads.

5. Update the app

Older versions of WhatsApp sometimes have bugs that have already been fixed in newer versions. Open Google Play or the App Store, search for WhatsApp, and check if there's a pending update.

6. Check storage permissions

WhatsApp needs permission to save files on your phone. Go to Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ WhatsApp โ†’ Permissions and confirm that "Files and media" (or "Storage") permission is granted.

7. When to reinstall WhatsApp

If none of the steps above work, the last resort is to uninstall and reinstall the app. Before doing so, make sure you have a recent backup (WhatsApp offers to create one automatically when you uninstall). When you reinstall it, your chats and photos will be restored.

โœ” If the photo still won't download after trying these steps, ask the person who sent it to resend it: sometimes the file gets corrupted at the source, and there's nothing you can do on your end.

Frequently asked questions

Why do WhatsApp photos arrive black?

This usually happens when the download is interrupted partway through. Delete the thumbnail, check your connection, and tap the photo again to download it once more.

Why does it only happen with photos from one contact?

That contact is probably sending photos at very low quality, or there was a temporary connection issue on their end when sending them. Ask them to resend the photos at original quality.

Does data saver mode affect photo downloads?

Yes. If you have data saver enabled in WhatsApp or in your phone's system settings, photos may not download until you open the app on wifi or unrestricted mobile data.
