How to recover the password to your Google account

Updated in 2026 · 4 minute read

Forgetting the password to your Google account is unnerving, since your email, photos, and many other apps depend on it. The official recovery process is simple if you follow these exact steps.

Before you start: always do this from accounts.google.com or the official Google app. Never enter your Google password on a link received by email, SMS, or WhatsApp: it's the most common way accounts get stolen (phishing).

1. Start the recovery process

  1. Go to accounts.google.com or open the Gmail/Google app on your phone.
  2. Enter the email address or phone number associated with the account.
  3. Tap "Forgot password?".

2. Verification with your phone or email

Google will offer to send a verification code to the recovery phone or email you set up when creating the account. Enter the code you receive and follow the instructions to set a new password.

Tip: if you have the Gmail app open on another device (for example, a relative's tablet or phone), Google may send you a notification directly to confirm it's you, without needing a code.

3. If you don't have access to any recovery method

If you no longer have the recovery phone or email, Google will ask you questions to confirm the account is yours: the approximate date it was created, previous passwords you remember, or frequent contacts. Answer as accurately as possible; the more information matches, the easier the recovery will be.

4. Create a strong password

When you regain access, choose a new password you haven't used before on that account, with at least 12 characters, combining uppercase, lowercase, and numbers. Avoid personal details like birth dates or names.

5. After recovering access

✔ With two-step verification turned on, this problem is much less likely to happen again.

Frequently asked questions

What do I do if I don't have access to my recovery phone or email?

Google will offer you additional questions to verify your identity, such as the approximate date the account was created or previous passwords you remember. The more information you provide, the easier it will be to recover access.

Is it safe to use pages that claim to recover Google passwords?

No. The only safe way to recover a Google account is through accounts.google.com or the official Google app. Any other website that asks for your password is an attempt to steal your data (phishing).

How long does it take Google to give me access again?

If you have access to your recovery phone or email, the process is immediate. If Google needs to verify your identity by other means, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days.
