What to do if Bizum isn't working or shows an error

Updated in 2026 · 4-minute read

Before assuming there's a serious problem or calling your bank, check these common causes: most Bizum issues get resolved in a couple of minutes.

In this article:

  1. You've exceeded the sending limit
  2. The number isn't registered with Bizum
  3. Update your bank's app
  4. Connection issues
  5. Temporary service overload
  6. When to contact your bank

1. You've exceeded the sending limit

Each bank sets a maximum amount per transaction and a maximum number of transactions per month. If you've gotten close to that limit, Bizum will reject the transaction with an error message. Check your specific limits in the Bizum section of your bank's app.

2. The number isn't registered with Bizum

To send or receive money, both parties need to have the service activated with the correct phone number. Ask the other person to confirm their exact number: it's sometimes mixed up with a different number saved in your contacts.

3. Update your bank's app

Bizum works built into each bank's app, not as a standalone app. If your app is outdated, it may show errors when processing the payment. Go to Google Play or the App Store and check for any pending updates.

4. Connection issues

Since it's a real-time transaction, you need a stable connection. If you're in an area with poor coverage, switch from wifi to mobile data (or vice versa) and try the transaction again.

5. Temporary service overload

During high-usage periods (for example, end of month or events with lots of payments between individuals), Bizum can get temporarily overloaded. If the error persists for no clear reason, wait a few minutes and try again.

6. When to contact your bank

If you've checked everything above and the error continues, or if the money has left your account but the other person hasn't received it, contact your bank's customer service directly: they can see the exact status of the transaction.

Important: never share your online banking credentials or codes received by SMS with anyone who contacts you claiming to be from your bank or from Bizum. No institution will ever ask you for them by phone, email, or WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

What's the maximum amount of money I can send with Bizum?

It depends on each bank, but in general Bizum allows sending between 0.50 and 1,000 euros per transaction, with a maximum number of monthly transactions also set by each institution. Check the exact limits in your bank's app.

Why does Bizum say the number isn't registered when the other person does have it?

They may have registered the number with a different bank than the one you expect, or the number might be saved with a different prefix in your contacts. Ask them to confirm the exact number they have Bizum activated on.

Does Bizum work without an internet connection?

No, you need a mobile data or wifi connection to both send and receive money, since the transaction is processed in real time through your bank's app.
