What to do if your phone doesn't recognize the SIM card

Updated in 2026 · 4 min read

If your phone shows a «no SIM» warning or simply doesn't detect the card, there's no need to rush to the carrier's store. Most of the time it's fixed with very simple checks. Follow these steps in order, from least to most invasive, before asking for a replacement card.

In this article:

  1. Restart the phone
  2. Take out the SIM card, check it and reinsert it
  3. Try the SIM in another phone and rule out airplane mode
  4. Update the software and, if needed, request a replacement

1. Restart the phone

Before touching the card, start with the simplest option: turn the phone completely off and back on. A simple restart fixes many cases, because the fault is usually in how the system reads the card at startup, not in the SIM itself. If the «no SIM» warning still appears after restarting, move on to the next step.

2. Take out the SIM card, check it and reinsert it

With the phone off, eject the SIM tray with the tool that comes with the phone or a paperclip. Before reinserting it, check the following:

Reinsert the tray, making sure it goes in straight and clicks into place, and turn the phone back on.

3. Try the SIM in another phone and rule out airplane mode

If the problem continues, it's worth figuring out whether the fault is in the card or in the phone. Try the SIM in another compatible phone: if it's not detected on that second device either, the card is probably damaged; if it works fine, the fault is in your phone.

While you're at it, also check two things that are easy to overlook: that airplane mode isn't accidentally turned on, and that there's no network restriction set in the phone's settings or in the SIM's own menu preventing its use.

4. Update the software and, if needed, request a replacement

Go to Settings and check whether there's a pending software update: some SIM recognition faults are related to the system and have already been fixed in later versions. Install it if available and restart the phone.

If after all these steps the phone still doesn't recognize the card, and especially if the SIM is old, has several years of use, or has been tested in another phone without success, it's most likely damaged or worn out. In that case, the next step is to request a replacement from your carrier.

To request a replacement, you can go to a physical carrier store with your ID, or request it by phone or from their app; they usually keep your same number.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone suddenly say there's no SIM?

The most common cause is a temporary card-reading glitch, which is fixed by restarting the phone or reseating the SIM. It can also be due to dirt on the contacts, a pending software update or, less often, physical damage to the card.

Can I damage the SIM card by taking it out and putting it back in several times?

Removing and reinserting it occasionally and carefully doesn't damage it. The risk appears if it gets bent, the gold chip gets scratched, or it's handled with dirty or wet hands, so always do it with the phone off and hold the card by its edges.

How long does my carrier take to give me a replacement SIM?

It depends on the carrier, but it's usually immediate if you go to a physical store with your ID, or 24 to 72 hours if you request it by phone or from the app and they mail it to you.
