How to make your phone's battery last longer

Updated in 2026 · 4 min read

If you notice your phone's battery running out sooner than you'd like, you don't need to switch phones. With a few simple settings and habits you can make it last several more hours every day.

In this article:

  1. Adjust brightness and use auto-brightness
  2. Close or limit background apps
  3. Turn on battery saver mode
  4. Turn off bluetooth, location and mobile data
  5. Keep apps and the system updated
  6. Avoid extreme temperatures

1. Adjust brightness and use auto-brightness

The screen is one of the components that consumes the most battery, and high brightness is one of the biggest culprits. Lower the brightness manually whenever you can and turn on auto-brightness so it adapts to ambient light without you having to think about it.

2. Close or limit apps running in the background

Some apps keep consuming battery even when you're not using them, especially if they update data or use location continuously. Check Settings → Battery to see which apps consume the most and limit background activity for the ones you don't need to stay always active.

3. Turn on battery saver mode when you need it

Battery saver mode reduces consumption by limiting background tasks, animations and other secondary processes. Turn it on when you know you won't be able to charge your phone for a few hours, and you'll notice the percentage drops much more slowly.

4. Turn off bluetooth, location and mobile data when you're not using them

Keeping bluetooth, location or mobile data permanently on makes your phone use battery constantly searching for connections or updating your position. Turn them off when you don't need them and only turn them on when you're going to use them.

5. Keep your apps and operating system updated

Updates don't just bring new features or fix bugs: they usually improve the energy efficiency of apps and the system itself. Check every so often whether you have pending updates and install them to benefit from those improvements.

6. Avoid extreme temperatures

Intense heat and cold degrade the battery faster and can make it perform worse even in the short term. Avoid leaving your phone in the sun, inside a closed car, or exposed to very low temperatures for long periods.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to charge your phone to 100%?

It's not harmful occasionally, but to extend battery life in the long run it's recommended to keep it generally between 20% and 80% when possible, avoiding constant full charges.

Should I manually close apps to save battery?

In general it's not necessary: current operating systems manage background apps well. Constantly closing apps can even use more battery, since they have to be reopened from scratch.

How long does a battery last before it needs replacing?

Most batteries maintain acceptable performance for 2-3 years of daily use. If you notice it draining much faster than before or the phone shutting down with battery remaining, check its status in settings or take it to a repair service.
