1. Clear the apps' cache
The cache consists of temporary files that apps build up to run faster, but over time they take up a lot of space.
- Android: Settings โ Storage โ Cached data โ Clear. This is an overall clean-up and doesn't delete anything important.
- iPhone: there's no single button; go to Settings โ General โ iPhone Storage and check which apps take up the most space to clear them one by one from their own settings.
2. Remove duplicate and blurry photos
Google Photos and the iPhone Photos app have automatic tools to detect duplicates, old screenshots, and blurry photos. Look for them under "Utilities" (Google Photos) or "Recently Deleted" and review the suggestions before confirming the deletion.
3. Check your downloads folder
PDFs, images forwarded via WhatsApp, and files from messaging apps quietly pile up in your phone's "Downloads" folder. Open it from your file manager and sort by size to find the largest files.
4. Clean up WhatsApp's media files
Go to WhatsApp Settings โ Storage and data โ Manage storage. There you'll see which chats take up the most space and you can selectively delete large videos and voice notes without touching the rest of the conversation.
5. Upload your photos to the cloud and free up the original
Both Google Photos and iCloud let you turn on "storage saver mode," which uploads your photos in original quality to the cloud and replaces the file on your phone with a lighter version. That way you keep your memories without using up local space.
6. Uninstall apps you don't use
Go to Settings โ Apps and sort them by size. That app you installed for a trip and haven't opened since could be taking up several hundred MB without you noticing.
